The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not too long a game, but the puzzles connected with the brutal murders, and the hints hidden in the thickly overgrown world may cause certain problems. Most of the game’s story is told through flashbacks as Prospero solves puzzles and puts the pieces together, and despite never actually interacting with anyone, you get a feel for the characters and the events that went down in this small Wisconsin town. The developers warn that the game will not lead you step-by-step throughout the game world so, in case of any difficulty, rely on this guide. What’s important though, for a game that’s based entirely on the unraveling of a story, is the voice acting. The game’s sound design really shines with the little things: creaking wood, rustling leaves, the soft thump of footsteps in an abandoned building. Ethan Carter takes a deliberately slow pace, for obvious reasons, and thus never has the chance to get clogged up and slow right down.Īs far as sound goes there’s nothing to complain about the music won’t blow your mind, but does a decent job of increasing and decreasing tension and emotion as needed.

It's only available on PC at the moment but a PS4 version is on the way. The story left me a bit puzzled and I can't say it particularly grabbed me, while the puzzles ranged from immediately obvious to completely obscure. I took a bunch of screenshots during my eight-hour adventure - and they look great thanks to the fact the game has no HUD cluttering up the screen. As occult-minded private detective Paul Prospero communicate with the dead to discover the fate of a missing boy and the mystery behind a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley. It really is a beautiful game with a selection of jaw-dropping vistas to gawp at. I wasn't hoping to discover secrets or side-quests - I was looking for the best angles to fully appreciate the game's stunning scenery.

Each section can be tackled in any order and a huge part of the game's appeal was I was free to wander off the beaten path and look for interesting points in the landscape. It's a first-person mystery adventure with a heavy emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving. The point is, while The Vanishing of Ethan Carter doesn't hold your hand in the traditional sense, it still tries awfully hard to make sure you don't miss anything.
